Much of the college basketball offseason is about finding players that fit the program.
Indiana head coach Tom Crean is one of the most energized and active guys on the court and on the recruiting trail. This past weekend, he hosted Stanford Robinson to Bloomington for an unofficial visit and the recruit was blown away. Two days later, the 6-foot-4 guard committed to Crean and Indiana.
“What Everyone has been waiting for Today I made my decision I Have committed to Indiana,” Robinson tweeted. “Hoosier Nation were Family!!”
New IU assistant Kenny Johnson, who filled the void left by Bennie Seltzer, was instrumental in the recruitment of Robinson. Johnson coached him both at Paul VI High School and Team Takeover, Robinson’s AAU team.
“Coach Johnson is the reason I’m at Paul VI High School right now,” Robinson told InsideTheHall.com prior to his decision. “He was there as the head assistant coach and he recruited me to come to Paul VI. But I’ve actually known Johnson since I was in the eighth grade.”
“I could definitely see myself up there (at Indiana) because of the relationship me and Coach Johnson have. I would always have somebody there to support me and keep me pushing.”
The left-handed guard averaged 14.5 points and 4.5 rebounds during his junior season at Paul VI High School in Fairfax, Virgina. He is ranked as the 46th best prospect in the 2013 class according to ESPN. Scout has him 50th and Rivals puts him 88th. Don’t put too much into rankings and remember, a lot can change in a couple years.
Robinson is the Hoosiers’ fourth verbal pledge in the 2013 class. He joins Indianapolis players Collin Hartman (Cathedral) and Devin Davis (Warren Central), along with big-man Luke Fischer from Wisconsin.
More to come on the scholarship crunch this commitment presents. IU is now oversigned by one for the 2013-14 season.
